Euro-BioImaging ERIC has been set up with the Czech Republic as a founding Member

On 29th October 2019, the European Commission founded a new European research infrastructure consortium Euro-BioImaging ERIC (European Research Infrastructure for Imaging Technologies in Biological and Biomedical Sciences). The Czech Republic has become one of the founding Members of the Euro-BioImaging ERIC, participated by a total of 14 European countries and international research and development organization EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory). The Euro-BioImaging mission is to provide biomedical scientists with imaging services that bridge biological and biomedical imaging and facilitate innovative and world-class research. Euro-BioImaging enables access to state-of-the-art imaging technologies, provides expert training and support in using them and, last but not least, helps with biological and biomedical image data management.

The statutory seat of Euro-BioImaging ERIC is hosted in Turku, Finland. At the same time, the research infrastructure operates a bio-imaging centre in Heidelberg, Germany, and a medical-imaging centre in Italy. Euro-BioImaging ERIC has reached the operation phase and offers its services to a wide European scientific community, while its portfolio is still growing. The Czech-BioImaging (National Infrastructure for Biological and Medical Imaging) large research infrastructure has been the Czech national partner of the Euro-BioImaging ERIC, hosting two Czech national nodes thereof. The first of them – Advanced Light Microscopy Multi Modal Multi Sited Node – is located in Prague and coordinated by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The second one – Advanced Light Microscopy and Medical Imaging Multi Modal Multi Sited Node – is located in Brno and coordinated by the Masaryk University.

The Czech-BioImaging large research infrastructure has been financed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports since the beginning of its activities. It has been also included in the latest 2019 update to the Roadmap of Large Research Infrastructures of the Czech Republic. For the period of 2020-2022, the project has been granted a funding in the amount of approx. 260 million CZK.
