Large research infrastructures provide state-of-the art environment for an excellent science.

Prof. Vladimir Matolin won the prize for outstanding research results

In the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, on 29 November, the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports awarded prof. RNDr. Vladimír Matolin, DrSc. from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University, in the field of higher education, science and research in 2017.

Prof. Matolin was awarded primarily for scientific results in the development of advanced materials for hydrogen technology. His findings have led to significant reductions in hydrogen fuel cell prices, thanks to a drastic reduction in the content of expensive platinum. MŠMT also praised prof. Matolin for the creation of a team of excellent young scientists. The research team, now under its leadership, operates in the state-of-the-art laboratory of the large research infrastructure SPL-MSB, which includes the Trieste optical materials research facility. This infrastructure has become a major center of nanomaterial research for catalysis, and its results have been successfully put into practice.

CzechLight Family Device Granted US Patent

Researchers of the CESNET Association in the area of optical technologies have developed a design that is now patent-protected. The US Patent Office has issued a patent for a device in the CzechLight family of advanced photonic solutions for transmission and processing of optical signals, which the Association’s experts have been developing for a long time.

The CzechLight family of devices, to which this solution belongs, enables attainment of optimum configuration of the optical network layer using application of the concepts NIL (Nothing in Line) and CEF (Customer Empowered Fibre). This technology also makes it possible to efficiently share the capacity of optical fibres using SDN (Software Defined Networking) for the layer L0 and to offer other advanced services such as lambda services and photonic services. Lambda services are based on transmission of an optical signal via fully transparent wave multiplex channels between endpoints. Photonic services enable purely optical transmission without conversion to an electric signal. They are thus designed for the most demanding applications.

CESNET is now looking for entities interested in manufacturing and deployment of the CzechLight family devices.
