77th ESFRI Forum Plenary was enriched by the second Open Session Meeting

The 77th ESFRI Forum Plenary was held on September 21st-22nd, 2021. The 2nd Open Session Meeting organised as a part of the ESFRI Forum brought together the ESFRI Delegates and representatives of the ESFRI Research Infrastructures to discuss their response to the Green Deal issue.

ESFRI Roadmap 2021 Update

In line with the ongoing roadmapping process, ESFRI Forum paid particular attention to the ESFRI Roadmap 2021 Update; its first part, “Strategy Report”, was presented to the Forum. The second part, “Landscape Analysis”, prepared as advanced analysis of the scientific needs and existing Research Infrastructure gaps as well as directions for strategic investments in the future, was agreed by the ESFRI Forum. The ESFRI delegates also agreed on the list of new Landmarks (the Projects that have successfully reached the implementation phase) approval procedure.

The ESFRI Roadmap 2021 Update provides a strategic vision of European excellent Research Infrastructures at various scientific disciplines. The new ESFRI Roadmap 2021 is supposed to be presented to the next Competitiveness Council meeting in November; the final graphical version will be officially presented during the Slovenian Presidency in December 2021 at ESFRI Roadmap 2021 Launch Event.

The Stakeholders Forum

The ESFRI delegates were informed about the progress of the ESFRI Stakeholders Forum organization – the 1st ESFRI Stakeholders Forum Meetup will take place on December 8th, 2021, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, as a hybrid event. The ESFRI Stakeholders Forum is a newly established platform, developed by ESFRI with the ambition to instigate an open dialogue among the different European Research Infrastructure stakeholders, in order to reinforce the position of Research Infrastructures as an essential pillar of the European Research Area. This concept was presented in the ESFRI White Paper adopted in 2020.

2nd ESFRI Open Session Meeting

The 77th ESFRI Forum was accompanied by the 2nd ESFRI Open Session meeting, which is one of the new ESFRI initiatives coming out of the ESFRI White Paper outputs, aiming at strengthening the ESFRI communication strategy. The Open Session meeting is intended to serve both the ESFRI Delegates and representatives of the ESFRI Research Infrastructures and facilitate two-way information exchange. This Open Session meeting was oriented at the European Green Deal focusing mainly on environmental and energy scientific domains. The next Open session meeting is scheduled for Spring 2022 aiming at the topic of Research Infrastructures and Big Data.

ESFRI activity report (Biannual report)

During this ESFRI Forum meeting the “ESFRI Activity Report 2019-20” was approved. The main intent of this report is to provide public information on ESFRI´s activities over the past two years; it is not only a record of past activities and meetings but also outlines the steps ESFRI took during the past year when Covid-19 outbreak affected its work at various levels. This report will be published as one of the deliverables of the StR-ESFRI2 project.

The 78th ESFRI Forum Plenary will take place during Slovenian Presidency in the EU Council in Ljubljana, on December 9th, 2021, following up the ESFRI Days (1st ESFRI Stakeholders Forum Meetup and ESFRI Roadmap 2021 Launch Event).
